The current location of Zammit
Oval was formerly a run down Poultry and small crop farm, mainly
growing pumpkins and tomatoes. The farm encompassed an area from
Deception Bay Rd to Acacia St, surrounding both sides of where Zammit
Street is today.
In 1973 Sam and Eileen Zammit purchased the 50 acre property and in 1974 converted half into a Trotting Track, which was located opposite the oval, on the other side of where Zammit Street is today. After extensive earthworks the other half of the property was turned into a Greyhound Training/Time Trial track which is now the oval. The actual Greyhound track was a circular track on top of the current bank area.
The tin shed they used for supplies/ticket sales for the Greyhound trials was the actual clubhouse the Centre occupied from 1983 until the new Clubhouse was built in 2010 with the aid of the State Government and the Moreton Bay Regional Council. Sam Zammit was a well known Driver/Trainer in the trotting community and ran the trotting track, while his son Tony operated the Greyhound track. In late 1982 Sam Zammit closed both the Trotting and Greyhound tracks, sub-divided and began to develop the land into the area it is today. Sam Zammit offered to donate 10% of his property which would have covered about half of the oval area and Divisional Councillors at the time, Tom and Pat McLoughlin (Tom & Pat later became Mayors of Caboolture & Pat is our current Patron) persuaded the Caboolture Shire Council to purchase the balance for $35000 and an understanding that the area would be called Zammit Oval.
Deception Bay Little Athletics was formed in 1981 and resided at the Deception Bay North Primary School's Oval. The Centre was formed to provide the opportunity for little athletes from the surrounding areas of Deception Bay, Rothwell and Burpengary to learn the basic athletic skills of running, jumping and throwing.
The first Committee had Noel McGrath as Centre Manager, Doug Rosemond as Secretary and Sharon Brady as the Treasurer and in 1983 with the assistance of the Caboolture City Council the Centre moved to its current location.
Over the years the Centre has produced many little athletes who have gone on to represent the State of Queensland
in the Australian Teams Championships (Joanna Stone, Laura Parmar, Rebecca Oliver, Allan Shervey, Jason Dudley, Kelly Pinkerton, Katie Hirning, Louise Varley, Lisa Franks, Leigh McCormick, Blake Scriven, Jarod Nicholas, Chiam James, Dean Atkins, Curtis Ricker,
James Lock, Mitchell Cooper, Shemaiah James, Darcy Roper, Alex Mould, Jordan Guy, Bailey Johnston & Dale Hebbard... just to name a few). Some athletes have also continued their athletic career past Little Athletics and progressed onto Amateur Athletics to represent Australia such as Joanna Stone (Javelin - World Championships
and the Olympics), Peter Nowill (3000m Steeplechase - World Championships 2002/2003, Olympics 2004 and Commonwealth Games 2006) and
Jason Dudley (Decathlon - World Youth Championships and winning a Bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games)
